The Unexamined Beliefs Deciding Your Choices

3-Minute Read

There’s a belief deciding your health, and you’ve never once looked at it.

In 2026, Forbes reported what boardrooms have started saying out loud: executive longevity is now a strategic conversation, not a personal wellness pursuit. Leaders are treating physical capacity as a business asset, on the theory that a leader’s biological capacity and their leadership capacity are the same capacity.

None of that is news to you. You already “know” your health matters. You’ve believed it for years, maybe since the first time a doctor, a mentor, or your own body told you so plainly you couldn’t not acknowledge it.

So if believing were enough, this would already be handled.

It isn’t. Something else is actually making that call instead of you, and the moment you see it, you’re free to make new choices in your own health. Today’s issue uncovers what’s at stake in your health as a leader and shines a light on what’s keeping you from the health you’re capable of.

Becky Henderson smiles for The Grip: Health, Where Leadership Capacity Begins. The unexamined belief deciding your choices.

the real reason founders know health matters and still don’t act

The Belief Driving the Gap Between What You Know and What You Do

“A healthy man wants a thousand things, a sick man only wants one.”

-Eastern Proverb

Your body is not a separate, independent unit from the rest of you. It is inextricably interconnected and interdependent with the whole of your being for as long as you walk the earth. Life needs a vehicle through which it can express itself, and for you, that vehicle is your body.

Founders the world over will intellectually acknowledge the importance of prioritizing their health then turn around and make choices that directly contradict that knowledge.

You already know health matters. The real issue is what’s keeping you from acting on it.

Any time what you believe conflicts with what you actually do, an older belief is driving the behavior, one stronger than the belief you’d say out loud. An unexamined belief about who you are and what you deserve is covertly making decisions keeping you at a level of health you’ve long outgrown.

In my 20+ years working with clients, here are the most common disempowered beliefs I’ve seen in leaders that directly shape their health choices:

Identity

  • I don’t matter.

  • I’m not an athlete.

  • Fitness isn’t for me.

  • I’m not a healthy person.

  • It’s too late for me to change.

  • Feeling tired is just part of growing old.

  • My effort to change doesn’t make a difference.

Judgment (The Condemnation Kind)

  • Exercise is too hard.

  • Seeking help is weak.

  • I’m ashamed of myself.

  • I always choose poorly.

  • Healthy food tastes bad.

  • Taking care of me is selfish.

  • I don’t deserve to feel good in my body.

Limitation

  • I don’t have time.

  • I’ll sleep when I’m dead.

  • Once I hit [milestone], then I’ll get healthy.

  • The body I want is impossible to achieve.

  • My health can wait until after this next ____________.

  • Investing in my health is a luxury I can’t afford right now.

A healthy man wants a thousand things, a sick man only wants one.
— Eastern Proverb

Any of these true for you? Dealing with the disempowered belief is Step 1 before you build new habits. New habits stacked on top of disempowered beliefs don’t work; they collapse under pressure.

If you don’t see yours on the list, but you struggle to invest in your health in a meaningful way, here’s the question to help you find what’s there:

“What do my current actions reveal about my relationship with my health?”

Let your actions speak and they’ll show you their source.

When you drop the disempowered story that keeps you from investing in your health, it gets much easier to do what you already know to do. A whole new world of action and habits suddenly becomes achievable.

7 Questions to See Your Physical Health as an Investment

Moving beyond the disempowered belief, the following seven questions will help you clarify useful changes you can make for prioritizing your health. Use them to spark ideas for action you’ll follow through on:

  1. What’s at stake at work and home if I don’t prioritize my health?

  2. How is my current physical condition impacting the quality of my life?

  3. In what ways must I develop physically to create the life I want?

  4. How do I need to see myself and physical fitness so that prioritizing my health is easy?

  5. What disempowered beliefs about my body am I willing to let go?

  6. What does my body need for me to start doing?

  7. What does my body need for me to stop doing?

Your body is the infrastructure your whole mission runs on. Like a motor vehicle, its condition decides not just where you go, but how well you get there. You will more easily, more effectively, and more enjoyably create more of the life you desire when your body is optimized to support you.

This week, get intentional with who you’re being about your health.

key takeaways

  1. Believing your health matters was never the missing piece. An older, unexamined belief has been deciding your health choices instead of you.

  2. Your leadership capacity and your physical capacity aren’t separate categories. What limits one limits the other.

  3. Seeing the belief that’s been running your health choices is what finally makes a different choice possible.
